Soon after, on the shores of Careyes, Mexico, while the family was in the ocean their son Azla called out, “Mommy! Green Butterfly! It’s Coco!” as a radiant very bright neon green butterfly danced through the surf around them landing on Lara’s shoulder sending her bursting into the most grateful tears. A moment of recognition. A moment of return.
The poem was written in this space between worlds as a meditation on transition, on loss, and on the unseen continuity that connects all living things.
